(the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life)

We are not only to avoid evil, not only to do good but, most importantly, to do the things of greatest worth. We are to focus on the inward things of the heart, which we know and value intuitively but often neglect for that which is trivial, superficial, or prideful.(General Conference, Oct. 1997, p.59)

4 所以,讀旁經的人,須要明白,因為靈顯明真理;
5 受靈啟發的人,就能從其中獲益;

Religion might then be defined as a mode of life which is the result of a belief in a superior being. Theological discussion alone is not in itself evidence that a person is living his religion.
Not until we thoroughly and persistently apply the theological principles learned, can it be said that we are living our religion.
It has been wisely said: Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only. . . . the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. (2 Corinthians 3:6.)
~So Shall Ye Reap by Reed A. Benson, Ezra Taft Benson

They will tell you that they have the good word of God, which already contained the everlasting Gospel; but if they have the word of God, I think I have proved to my hearers this afternoon, that they have not the authority to administer it, and that makes all the difference. They may have the word, but the Bible itself says that the letter killeth. The word is not calculated to save unless we can obey it. Can I be baptized if there is no man on the earth authorized to baptize me? No. He that is not born of the water and of the spirit can in no wise enter the kingdom of God.
~JD 16:349, Orson Pratt, January 25, 1874

The sacrament of the Lord's Supper should be taken worthily.
The letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. Do we take the bread and the water in remembrance of the body, the flesh, and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, or do we just take bread and water?
~President Spencer W. Kimball
